Gian Quasar (Part 1)
Into the Bermuda Triangle
1 Hour, 20 Minutes

In our first two-part episode of Season IV, BoA:Audio heads to previously uncharted waters (on our program) and an area of mystery once huge in esoterica but now relegated to the peripheral ... the Bermuda Triangle. Our guest is Gian Quasar, author of the outstanding book Into the Bermuda Triangle.

In this, our first installment of the interview, we'll discuss the history of the Triangle, both as a phenomenon and as an enigma of public interest. We'll also discuss some of the most famous (and infamous) Triangle disappearances, like the Carol A. Doerring case, Flight 19, Christopher Columbus' Triangle experiences, the Ellen Austin story, the tale of the USS Cyclops, and many others. In Part One, we'll also cover the government's take on the Triangle, Gian's arguments against the various Triangle explanations put forth by debunkers, and disappearance flaps in the Triangle, including the "December Hex."

It's a richly detailed edition of the program unearthing one of esoterica's "lost" mysteries: the Bermuda Triangle.

Full Preview: We kick things off with the standard bio/background of Gian Quasar and how he got interested in the Bermuda Triangle. Following that, Gian gives us a thumbnail definition of what the Bermuda Triangle is, for those folks living under a rock somewhere. Then we find out if Gian has ever ventured into the infamous Triangle. Based on Gian's exhaustive research, we learn what the general average is for missing planes and boats per year and he tells us about disappearance flaps in the Triangle, such as in 1978/79. He also enlightens us as to how the disappearance rate has changed quite a bit in the last year or so and what that seems to be the case. We also find out if there are any other significant trends with Triangle disappearances and Gian tells us about the "December Hex."

Beginning to look more closely at the Triangle disappearances, we first talk about how many of those that go missing are seasoned pilots & seamen, which flies in the face of popular claim of human error as the cause of Triangle vanishings. Next we talk about the changing shape of the Triangle and how it is more amorphous than the generally held public perception of a "triangle."

We then discuss the evolution of the Bermuda Triangle as a pillar of the esoteric community, beginning with its introduction to the scene, the explosion in popularity of the Triangle, and then the post-70's "deep freeze" where the phenomena seemed to vanish from the the public eye. Gian speculates on what elements may have caused the "Triangle fever" of the 1970's.

Looking at disappearances in the Triangle, Gian tells us about any patterns that might be found and he described both "standard disappearances" and "bizarre disappearances." Gian shares some of the more truly strange aircraft disappearances attributed to the Triangle. He also points out one key aspect of BT disappeances: the lack of any signal from emergency devices used to locate missing ships and planes. This segues into Gian speculating on just why it is that the Bermuda Triangle seems to resonate with people, at times moreso than the more popular mysteries like Bigfoot or UFOs.

Following that we discuss another odd layer to the BT mystery: derelict (or abandoned) ships that turn up in the Triangle. He recalls one such famous case, The Carol A. Doerring case. He also tells us about a couple of amazing stories of derelict planes that may have been Triangle-related as well.

Looking at famous and noteworthy plane disappearances in the Triangle, we first talk about a May 27th, 1962 plane vanishing which saw the only wreckage found to be a nosewheel of the plane with bizarre characteristics. Then we talk about perhaps the most famous of all Bermuda Triangle flight disappearances: the vanishing of Flight 19. This leads to another interesting element of some flight disappearances: the fact that some make radio communications to land, though hours after the planes should have run out of fuel. Before we move on to the missing boats, Gian explains why it is easier to document missing planes rather than missing ships.

Moving on, we look at the oceanic elements to the Triangle. We start with the Sargasso Sea, a truly bizarre element to the waters of the Triangle. Next, we look way back in history at the strange events that befell Christopher Columbus' voyage through the Triangle. Following that, Gian recounts the infamous case of the Ellen Austin, which was reported to be a derelict ship discovered, recapitulated, and then mysteriously abandoned again. We also take a thorough look at perhaps the most infamous missing ship case in the Triangle: the USS Cyclops. Gian explains why he thinks there were more human elements at work behind the Cyclops disappearance, rather than attributing it to the Triangle itself. Lastly, we look at cases of submarines that have gone missing in the Triangle.

We then briefly talk about divers that go missing in the Triangle and whether or not they may have fallen victim to "rapture of the deep." Gian then talks about one of the roadblocks to Bermuda Triangle research: the difficulty in establishing a boat "disappearance." Looking at the big picture of Bermuda Triangle disappearances, Gian estimates how many planes and boats he has documented disappearing in the area since WWII and the number is staggering. He also explains why it is harder to get information on pre-WWII cases and why there are so few flight cases before WWII.

We find out what, if any, the government's official stance is on the Triangle, especially in light of so many planes disappearing there during WWII and beyond. Gian also details how he played a part in changing the government's official statement on the Triangle, which had grown horribly outdated over the last few decades. We then find out how extensive the investigations were into the Triangle during the boom of the 1970's. We also learn what these investigations uncovered about the Triangle.

Following that, we talk about Lawrence Kusch's infamous book Bermuda Triangle: Mystery Solved and Gian explains the weakness of that work and why the title is highly misleading. Looking at another tact taken by skeptics of the Triangle, Gian argues against the theories surrounding methane gas as the cause of disappearances.

Wrapping up Part One, we look at plane disappearances and radar, we talk about how the actual time it takes for the plane to disappear is seen to be very fast, usually within seconds. Gian contrasts a plane disappearing in the Triangle to a plane crashing as far as how they appear on radar.

Into the Bermuda Triangle (Part 2) on BoA:Audio

Gian Quasar (Part 2)
Into the Bermuda Triangle
1 Hour, 36 Minutes

BoA:Audio concludes our marathon conversation with Gian Quasar, author of Into the Bermuda Triangle. Part 2 begins at last week's cliffhanger: the stories of those who have entered the Triangle, had bizarre experiences, and lived to tell the tale. Gian shares a number of fascinating and terrifying stories of Triangle near-misses. We'll discuss the infamous electric fog which is a telltale sign of Triangle troubles, the Devil's Triangle of the South China Sea, the Great Lakes Triangle, tangential esoteric elements that have been tied to the Triangle such as the Atlantic Ridge & the theories of worldwide catastrophe around 4000 BC. We'll cover the Bimini Road, Edgar Cayce's Atlantis predictions, the Indian vimanas, Martian and Lunar anomalies, and the dreaded three letter word: UFO.

Plus, if it's possible to study the Triangle, the long term positive byproduct of the Triangle disappearances, Gian's role in the resurgance of Triangle popularity, the origins of Gian's unique name, and his impending book on Bigfoot. Plus, as always, tons and tons more. It's another jam packed edition of BoA:Audio which emerge from the fog that is the Bermuda Triangle.

Full Preview: We kick off Part 2 by discussing perhaps the most chilling Bermuda Triangle topic of all: those who experienced the Triangle phenomenon and "lived to tell the tale." Gian details what the usual "symptoms" are of a Triangle experience and relates the story of Bruce Gernon, perhaps the most famous Triangle survivor, who had two experiences in the area. He shares insights, learned from Gernon, about the infamous "fog" that is often attributed to Triangle incidents. Gian also recounts Charles Lindburgh's encounter with the fog while flying through the Triangle. Gian talks more about the electric fog and how it seems to carry the craft after it evelops it and also how weather instruments do not pick up the fog. We then speculate if there is an additional element to the Triangle disappearances outside of the electronic fog, since finding wreckage of missing ships and planes is very rare.

Next, we look at ships that have experienced anomalies in the Triangle and survived, including a bizarre and fascinating story involving a tugboat towing another ship and the fog enveloping the towed ship. He also shares an event from the 1990's of another strange seafaring encounter within the Triangle.

We go off topic, briefly, to discuss how extensive contemporary news reports are about Triangle disappearances. Gian then talks about dealing with the media, since he's become the contemporary "go to" guy for Bermuda Triangle information. This segues into a humorous aside about the origins of Gian's name.

Following that, we take a closer look at the electric fog and Gian explains why it is "one of the most key" elements to the Triangle. He shares a great case about a pilot who encountered the fog, tried to write about it for a piloting magazine, and had her title referencing the Bermuda Triangle censored. This leads to some discussion on whether there is a JNAP-type law preventing pilots from talking about their Triangle experiences. Gian then tells us about the reporting standards of the various agencies that oversee Triangle events.

From there, we talk about the "Devil's Triangle" of the South China Sea and compare/contrast it with its more famous counterpart. We also talk about the strange number of disappearances that occur over and on the US's Great Lakes region, making it the #2 area in the world for strange disappearances.

We then talk about some of tangential esoteric elements which may be at work in the Triangle disappearances. We start with the Atlantic Ridge, the theories of worldwide catastrophe around 4000 BC, Gian's thoughts as a "catastrophist," his problems with the uniformitarianist point of view on Earth Changes, and how it all may tie in to the Triangle. Another, potentially related, element to the Triangle lore that we discuss is the Bimini Road and Gian talks about how that is related to the infamous Edgar Cayce predictions of discoveries there. Gian also clears up some confusion over the Cayce predictions of Atlantis & Bimini. We look at the connection between stories of Atlantis (notably via Edgar Cayce's influence) and the Triangle, along with how that all connects with some theories in Ufology.

We discuss Martian and Lunar anomalies and how even those esoteric genres have been tied to the Triangle in some form or fashion. We get Gian's take on the "chicken v. egg" argument of the anomalies: were they created by early humans going outward from Earth or ETs on their way to the planet. This leads to some discussion on the Indian Vimanas, which Gian gives a throrough look at in Into the Bermuda Triangle.

Breaking the 4th wall a bit, we ponder why mainstream science still refuses to look at some of the anomalies of pre-history which suggest more advanced early humans. Gian then speculates on what it might take for science to change its perspective on this sticky issue. Lending credence to the worldwide disaster theory, Gian details the "Population Equation" which suggests that there was a serious disruption in the Earth's population at some point in the not-too-distant past.

We finally come around to discussing that dreaded four-letter word that often gets related to the Triangle: UFOs. We start by finding out how prevalent UFO reports are to the Triangle area. We also learn what sort of UFO sightings have been reported by those who have had Triangle experiences and managed to survive. We get Gian's perspective on how much of a role UFOs may play in the Triangle disappearances.

After that we discuss the popular notion that planes and boats aren't just disappearing in the Triangle but that they are going "someplace" and we get Gian's take on that idea and how possible that might be. We also muse about how the "travel to someplace else" mythos has attached itself to the Triangle, despite there being no evidence for that aspect of the story. We also ponder if there is any way to actually study the Bermuda Triangle or if it is more akin to fishing, which requires repeated attempts to induce some event in the Triangle.

We get Gian's perspective that, at the end of the day, something positive will come out of the Triangle disappearances, in the form of alternative energy or science discoveries. Jumping back a bit to our discussion on the infamous fog inside the Triangle, we talk about how similar fog has been accheived during Hutchinson Effect experiments and speculate what that correlation might mean.

Looking at the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon as a whole, we find out what Giant's preferred theory is as to what is truly going on inside the Bermuda Triangle, based on all his research. Heading towards the close, we smash the 4th wall and get Gian's thoughts on why it seems like the Bermuda Triangle, once huge in esoterica, has become so marginalized in today's scene. We also find out what the general attitude is of people who live within the Triangle to its esoteric reputation.

Wrapping things up, we find out what's next for Gian, starting with an upcoming book from him titled Recasting Bigfoot which he promises to be "quite different from everything else" and to "blow a lot of the bull away." He also provides some fascinating teasers as to what will be in the book. Additionally, he previews his other impending two books dedicated to specific Triangle cases: Flight 19 (They Flew into Oblivion) and the USS Cyclops. We also find out what else is coming up from Gian Quasar, including an indy film he is developing about the "Lost Nahani Valley."
